'You don't use your Character/Design Hoader/Price'

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 29, 2014, 6:32 PM

Someone needed to make a journal about this.

I have many characters and designs, roughly 30+ from ones I made myself, some I bought, some I traded, and some given to me. From those I have 'fan made', original, and closed/open species characters. Every single one of my characters have a typed up Bio, proper ref, and own folder on my computer. Every single one is properly 'cared for'. I commission art all the time to 'care' for my characters and support the art community, I draw my characters all the time from doodles at work to drawings privately stored on my computer (I only post roughly half the art I make online), and even if I didn't 'care' for them in this way these characters and designs belong to ME. I can do (almost) whatever I wish with them.

I have gotten a lot of "You are hoarding characters/You don't use your characters!" and "Leave some for the rest of us!"
It's extremely rude to assume someone doesn't care for their character(s) just because they don't have the time or means to draw them every second of every day and even ruder to assume they are a 'hoarder' when they have what people consider 'a lot of characters'. Most of my characters were bought or traded for especially the species ones such as my mantibabs, water dogs, ren fair, sushi dog, etc and at one point everyone in the entire community had an equal chance of acquiring them.

Another common phrase I hear A LOT is "I don't have enough money/You are rich/These characters are too expensive."
I work a full time 40+ hour job, I save my money, and I budget my money. Regardless of your age or situation you are capable of doing the exact same thing to some degree. Art is also a luxury and many artists want some form of payment for their work and creations, which is completely reasonable, and usually that is money. People do not, nor should they be expected, to give out their work, time, and creation without some form of compensation. Many of the characters I and others own that were bought were on commission or for auction for a VERY fair price or starting bid and were available to nearly every single user on this site at one point. People fairly bought or bid to acquire that character and yes, sometimes that price may seem 'high' to others but bottom line is it was offered for a FAIR price to begin with.

Which brings me to my last point.
An artist should NEVER feel guilty that their work is sought out for, demanded, or bought for a good price.
This is THEIR art and as a community built upon ARTISTS shouldn't we support these ARTISTS for doing well with THEIR art?
Shouldn't we be happy they are succeeding and even living off of what they love?

Because that is not what I see half of the time.
In nearly every single Auction or Commission journal I see extremely rude, unwanted, and unnecessary same few comments of:
"This is too expensive/Not worth this much!"
"This design/species is unoriginal!"

Who the hell are YOU to judge what is worth this much and that so and so is unoriginal especially ON THE ARTISTS OWN DEVIATION/JOURNAL?
"Freedom of speech/I'm just giving my opinion/I'm giving critique/It's a public forum!"
None of these statements are any form of an excuse to be a rude asshole which is exactly what you are when you make comments such as these ESPECIALLY if they are not asked for. This has been said a million times but all you have to do is ignore, walk away, or keep it to yourself. When you post comments like this how do you think it makes an artist feel because I guarantee it's not a positive feeling in the least bit.

The entire point to this journal and the bottom line is:
Think before you post because those words mean a lot more than a few pixels on a screen.

Do you have a bio n stuff for your Nume?
FlickaBee Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I did have one started but I never did complete it as I actually sold the nume back to tikre since I've been trying to downsize characters.
Tikre was really attached to the nume though and it's back where it belongs. c:

exactly omg!!
i hardly ever have time to draw my gorgeous babes ;o;;
but because of that, I spend literally every dollar I make from commissions
and spend it on art of my characters, so it's not like i'm "not caring" for them v-v
gosh if anyone ever said that to me i would die of laughter like please honey bear you clearly don't know me and don't see all the art I have of my characters it's literally insane x'D
FOR EXAMPLE, i've only ever drawn my sushi dog like once in an icon,
but he has probably the most art out of any of my chars- even my main fursona
and he has a wonderful co-owner who is my lovely friends and she draws adorable art of him all the time and I love it!! vuv <33

ps, i see commissioned art of your babs all the time in the mantibab group so they are definitely cared for x'D whoever would say that you don't care for your characters or "hoard" them doesn't know you and is just jealous of your gorgeous characters honestly!

to be truthful i feel a bit better personally to hear someone say this, i am sick nearly all of the time and when i am able to draw i spend it working on adoptables and commissions, often for much less than i think i should get for them(is asking for a dollar for an hour of work reasonable?) and i really do not have time to work on my own bought ocs so i generally feel bad about having the ones i do have and worse about the idea of buying any more vxv i don't want people to accuse me of wasting an oc and try to take it away from me

I agree to all of it! My friend had a lot of character and she'd always be upset cuz people say u have to many characters make 1 an open species or give 1 to me. I felt bad and this needed to be said

Wonderfully said! I agree 100%!! I too see this far too often and really it is disheartening. It's good to see someone with such a level head on their shoulders. :)

May I copy paste a section of this to share?
It's exactly the words I've been trying to tell
people when they ask me why I buy things
like sushi dogs

Thank you
I have over 200 characters and counting. As you said some were traded for art, some bought with points and some bought with money. I've not had anyone call me a hoarder or say bad about it, but if they do then this is where I shall lead them.
I love all my characters, honestly it is a fear of mine that the original owner of one will come up to me and take it away from me cause I don't draw it constantly. That hasn't happened either.
I can't even sell or trade any of them, they're all too special to me ;;
Even if I wanted to I probably can't anyway due to some people's rules-

Gosh, I seriously agree with this journal :heart: ;v;

So many people have put me down or made me feel bad because I have a lot of characters. Some say statements such as "You always get the characters that I wanted" and assume that they would have loved that character more than me. Maybe they would have? But they had the exact same chance to purchase the character that I had. They could have bid up or said AB in a lot of these cases before I even saw the deviation. In my hands I make sure my characters are cared for and given attention. If I no longer connect to a character I try to find it the best home it possibly could, which a lot of times they do.

I do not have a steady income at all. I'm not rich, as a lot of times I have $0.00 on me at all times. I work hard to raise money and when I acquire it I use it to buy art to care for the characters I already own. Sometimes I might buy a few new characters, but I make sure that they're also graciously spoiled with high quality art.

I've personally been, and seen, people be harassed and even hated because someone is jealous over the character's they own. No one should demean others for having characters that they enjoy or even selling them and making a living off their art. It's completely ridiculous and I'm honestly surprised that this still happens so often in what was meant to be a friendly art community! x'D

Gee, amen. I get super pissy when people say stuff like this to me. For a couple of years I was in and out of the emergency room monthly or weekly and was very ill or a long time. Because of this I began posting a lot less art and using my characters less; and a couple of people, during this time, were rude enough to accuse me of not taking care of my characters, or try to guilt me into trading or giving my characters to them by saying "but you don't even use them!"

I think a lot of those people are just acting on jealousy and other negative feelings, but it really pisses me off when people say things like that and don't consider that not only do people care for their characters in their own way, but sometimes things in life happen to where people simply can't draw, write about, or use their characters as much as they would like to. Life happens. If owning and / or collecting character designs makes people happy, then they're allowed to enjoy that happiness, regardless of what they do with them, anyways. Hell, even collecting or hoarding characters is not wrong in theory; especially if the collectors are paying for them, and by doing so, supporting artists who may make a living on their art and character designs.

I know I have well over 150 characters, but even if I don't post about each one, they're still my babies uvu
I can name them all and what each is like, I give them all an equal share of commissioned art.. Even if
I have a million characters, I consider myself a great mama to them!
